Safety in children's bedrooms
We don't always realise that bedrooms can also be areas of danger for baby but taking a few basic safety precautions should reduce any major possible risks.

- Fit safety locks on all windows and don't leave furniture near them.
- Put special plastic safety covers on any furniture with sharp corners.
- Store toys and games at a low level so that your child doesn't have to stretch or be tempted to climb up to get at them.
- Don't leave toys lying around on the floor.
- Don't put an electric fire anywhere near your child's bed at night because she could throw off her blanket or quilt and cause a fire.
- Buy non-flammable nightclothes.
- Wall-mounted lights are safer because they have no flexes trailing on the floor.
- Never leave your baby in her cot with the side down.
- Never leave your baby alone on the changing table, even for a second.
- Keep a baby monitor by your child's bed so you can hear if she wakes up in the night.
- Put a stair gate across your child's bedroom doorway once she is crawling. Don't put one at the top of the stairs as you might trip over it.
