Styes
A stye is an infection in the hair follicles of the lower eyelashes. It looks like a small boil on the eyelid - a red swelling with a central area of pus.
What to do

Eyes are very precious. Never take chances; get medical advice if you are at all worried. Don't use any of the patent treatments from chemists as they may make specific antibiotics less effective should they be prescribed by your doctor. You may notice that the eyelash is loose and if your child is co-operative you can release the pent-up pus inside the stye by just pulling the hair out. It won't be painful as the infection will already have dislodged it from its hair follicle. Alternatively, you can bathe the stye with a cotton wool bud dipped in cooled, boiled water.
